The institute is funded by donations from AMEA branches across the UK and will be a state-of-the-art teaching eye hospital with a planned completion by December 2020.
It will benefit the whole of West Africa providing free premium eye treatments for thousands of patients every year.
Haider Hameed, one of the organisers of the virtual walk said: “I feel in an honored position to help others across the world who are vulnerable and less fortunate.
“I humbly request the generous public to contribute as even a small donation will have a big impact. £50 can save one person from blindness and transform their life. No person ever became poor by helping others, if anything, it makes our heart more richer. Donations can be made on the following JustGiving page. Help the BLIND in West Africa to see again.
