A Muslim youth group in Sheffield are continuing the tradition of selling poppies to raise money for the Royal British Legion.

Members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) are collecting in high streets, rail stations and stadiums around South Yorkshire this year.

In an eleven-year partnership with the Royal British Legion, members of the group have raised over £200,000 through the Poppy Appeal.

Royal British Legion community fundraising coordinator Deborah Armantrading said: “AMYA have been crucial in raising funds for the Poppy Appeal for several years, participating in mass collections all over the UK.

The Legion are extremely pleased with the enthusiasm and commitment from all of the volunteers. We enjoy working with AMYA as they are dedicated and passionate about the charity work, and the Poppy Appeal would not be the same without their help.”

Hussam Bin Nasar, Youth Leader of AMYA Sheffield said: “As Muslims, we believe it is our responsibility to show loyalty to Britain, and loving one’s country is part of our faith.

“We always seek to work for the betterment of our country and its people. We hope that our participation is a clear indication of our desire for peace and unity between all peoples, nations and religions.”

AMYA is one of the largest and oldest Muslim youth groups in the UK, with over 8,600 members spread across its 124 chapters in the UK.
