Volunteers Make a Clean Sweep Around Keighley and Sutton-in-Craven

MEMBERS of Keighley’s Ahmadiyya Muslim Association have been making a clean sweep.
They targeted areas around Keighley and South Craven as part of the Great British September Clean.

To comply with lockdown restrictions, the volunteers teamed-up with members of their own families to carry out individual litter-picks.

Areas covered included the West Lane and Shann Park neighbourhoods of Keighley, plus Laycock and Sutton-in-Craven.

Litter was also cleared from popular beauty spots, including grass verges close to Keighley Tarn and at Lund’s Tower near Sutton.

Association president, Mujeeb Rahman, said members were keen to do something despite lockdown.

“We still wanted to do our bit in serving our town and helping to keep our streets clean,” he said.

“We always try to instil in our members the values of volunteering and community service, as taught by the teachings of Islam.”

Faheem Rahman, who helped co-ordinate the sessions, thanked the Keighley area co-ordinator’s office for providing equipment.

He added: “We look forward to helping our town in the future wherever we can.”

The litter-pick was the latest in a series of community initiatives staged by the association.

Members took part in tree-planting at Riddlesden several months ago.

And in May the association showed its appreciation to staff at Airedale Hospital for their efforts during the coronavirus crisis.

Members donated 200 meals as a ‘thank you’ to workers at the Steeton site.

Checks were also carried out with households in the community to see if people needed any help, such as with the delivery of essential supplies.
