Muslim Youth Plant Poppies To Commemorate WW1

An installation of ceramic poppies, unveiled at the Tower of London on 5th August 2014, is to symbolise 100 years since the first full day of Britain’s involvement in World War One. 888,246 poppies will be planted in the tower’s moat to commemorate each fallen soul during the war. AMYA UK has already helped to plant thousands of poppies on a bi-weekly basis to help with such an enormous project. Hundreds of volunteers are sent every weekend, demonstrating the organisation’s loyalty and commitment to its country. The poppies will continue to be planted until 11th November – Armistice Day – at which point the moat will be a sea of red, a very powerful scene to commemorate such a deadly war.

Zafar Khan (above), a member of AMYA, said that “I really feel passionately about remembering the fallen soldiers who showed loyalty to our country, and planting poppies is an enjoyable and powerful way to show this.” This is not the first time AMYA has helped out on such an occasion, the Community annually assists with the Poppy Appeal throughout the United Kingdom.
