Muslims spreading message of peace

HASLEMERE Mayor Malcom Carter was one of more than 60 friends and neighbours attending the Jamia Ahmadiyya UK ‘open house,’ at its college in Hindhead Road, on Saturday.

It was the fifth year the Institute of Modern Languages and Theology, based at Branksome Place, has invited residents in to meet staff and students and enjoy a tour of the campus.

The college’s prized handwritten Koran was on display in the library (pictured right), together with the dissertations written by final year students.

“It went very well,” said lecturer Ataul Momin Zahid, who organised the event.

“We had a good chat with everyone and many of our guests stayed for lunch with us afterwards, which was a further opportunity to sit together and talk.

“The whole purpose of the event is to invite our neighbours in and show them what we do. Malcolm is a very good friend.

“The day after the 2017 Westminster Bridge terrorist attack, which was condemned by Ahmadiyya, he came to the college with a candle of peace.

“That was just such a nice gesture.”
