New Year’s Day clean up in the city centre

Equipped with brushes, bin bags, litter-picking sticks and high-vis jackets members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association took to the streetsMembers of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) equipped with brushes, bin bags, litter-picking sticks and high-vis jackets spent New Year’s morning tidying up Leicester’s City Centre, as well as city and town centres across the country. The initiative has now become an annual tradition for Young Muslims of Britain’s largest organised Muslim Community. As part of the ‘Mercy for Mankind’ campaign, AMYA will be organising various community projects including street cleaning, tree planting, fundraising initiatives, blood donations and various other projects throughout the year.

Commenting on the campaign, the Regional Youth Leader for East Midlands, Adil Ahmed, said: “Littering costs the UK an estimated £660 million a year. While the Government and Local Authorities are doing a great deal to address this issue, we feel strongly that it is our religious and civic duty to also act. “From a religious perspective, both cleanliness and looking after our local communities is an essential part of the Islamic faith. “With this in mind, our members will be kicking off 2023 with a nationwide street cleaning day.”

AMYA is an auxiliary body of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, a religious and charitable Muslim organisation. With more than 9,000 members spread across 150 chapters in the United Kingdom, AMYA frequently partakes in tree planting, supporting the homeless and foodbank donation sessions.   In 2022, it raised more than £500k for various British charities, facilitated 1.6 million meals being given to the vulnerable, and donated more than 10 tonnes of food to food banks across the UK.
