Kamal’s 50k Leukaemia hospital room challenge
A 32-year-old Leukaemia patient is undertaking a marathon challenge from his hospital room to try to raise £50,000 for charity.
Kamal Aftab from Huddersfield is aiming to do the marathon during his treatment at St James’s hospital in Leeds.
Kamal, who works as an optometrist and has a passion for volunteering, was diagnosed with a blood cancer: Acute Myeloid Leukaemia three weeks ago.
Cancer, Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in my case, has only deepened my love of volunteering and only heightened my realisation of how important charity is.
So I’m challenging myself to complete a very special marathon for charity during my chemotherapy treatment: a marathon while confined to my five square-metre room, armed only with a pedometer and a smile.”

Kamal has so far managed to raise £35,000 towards his target and has been helped on his way by a host of well wishes including the odd celebrity.
