A Muslim group launched its Poppy Appeal in Upton Park last week with a pledge to raise half a million pounds for military veterans.

Representatives from Ahmadiyya Muslim Elders Association UK gathered at Baitul Ahad Mosque in Tudor Road to kick start the fundraising drive, which will see its hundreds of volunteers across the country sell red poppies door to door; through stalls at local supermarkets and train stations for the Royal British Legion.

Donations will go towards serving and former service personnel and their families.

“On the basis of our religious beliefs, we are obliged to serve humanity and support peace,” said regional president Abdul Wadood Khan.

He added: “This is a wonderful opportunity to help those who served their country so that we may live in peace and furthermore it is an opportunity to remember those who lost their lives during the World Wars.”

AMEA UK launched the campaign following prayers on Friday, October 19.
