Hartlepool mosque hosts fifth annual peace seminar to spread message of unity

Dignitaries and members of the community attended an annual event promoting peace and unity at Hartlepool’s Nasir Mosque.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community held their fifth annual Peace Seminar at the mosque in Brougham Terrace.

Establishing Peace Through Justice was the topic of the event which was attended by around 45 guests.

They included Ceremonial Mayor of Hartlepool Councillor Brenda Loynes, Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner Barry Coppinger and members of the Royal British Legion.

Bilal Atkinson, president of the Hartlepool branch of the Ahmadiyya Community, gave an introduction into their work on a local and national level.

Mosque Imam Maulana Tahir Selby then delivered the main speech on establishing peace through justice, using verses from the Qur’an to explain how Islam promotes peace and justice for everyone, whether an individual, state and country.

Hartlepool Labour election candidate Mike Hill spoke about the importance of peace, tolerance and justice for everyone in Hartlepool.

Roy Smith and Rob Simpson of the Royal British Legion accepted a cheque for £500 raised by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Hartlepool during this year’s poppy appeal.

The legion presented a certificate of thanks to youth leader Shahid Mahmood of the fundraising team.

Mr Selby said: “The event was praised by the people who attended and they found it enlightening and thoughtful.

“I always look forward to these events as it not only helps bring people together, but also give them an opportunity to talk about peace, helps promote love and unity and to look at ways we can resolve the present crises in the world.”
